Video poker

videopokerVideo poker is a type of poker played in a machine against the house, not around a table against other players. Nearly all types of available video poker games are based on Five Card Draw and allows you to replace 1-5 cards once in hope of improving your hand.

Unlike traditional casino poker, there is no dealer hand to compare your hand against when you play video poker. Instead, your hand needs to reach a predetermined minimum requirement for you to get paid. The better the hand, the more you win. Check the pay table of the video poker machine to find out more about the machine you are interested in playing.

Playing video poker

  1. Starting by choosing which machine to play on. A Jacks or Better video poker machine will pay out if you get a pair of jacks or better, a Tens or Better video poker machine will pay if you get a pair of tens or better, a Deuces Wild video poker machine will help you by allow you to use the deuces as wild card, and so on. Each machine has its own pro’s and con’s.
  2. Make your bet and start the game. You will receive five cards face-up.
  3. Tell the machine which cards to keep and which ones to exchange for new cards from the deck. You can exchange everything from 0 to 5 cards, it’s entirely up to you.
  4. You now have your final hand. If it reaches the minimum requirement set forth by the pay table, you will get paid. Otherwise, you will lose your bet.

Since you are allowed to make a decision that will impact the outcome of the game, video poker is a casino game with a skill element. In this regard, video poker is similar to blackjack.

Pay out

Each video poker machine have their own pay table that shows which hands that pay out and how much you get. Even video poker machines with the same name can have vastly different pay tables, so do not assume that the pay table for one Jacks or Better video poker machine will be true for another Jacks or Better video poker machine, and so on.

Below you will find an example of a commonly used pay out table. As you can see, this is for a machine where you need at least a pair of jacks to win any money. How much you get for a particular hand depends on how much you wagered. A higher wager means a higher payout.
